What Claude Cowork actually is

Claude Cowork is a mode in the Claude desktop app that lets Claude work with files on your computer and your connected apps. It reads them, makes new ones, runs small programs, and handles multi-step tasks while you watch and approve. Anthropic says it plainly: Cowork “is not a chat assistant,” which is their polite way of saying it does not just talk.

It exists because Anthropic’s own non-technical teams, marketing, data, the people who do not live in a terminal, started sneaking into Claude Code because nothing else could handle their messy, multi-step work. What it can do

The easiest way to understand it: think about the job you would love to hand to someone else.

• Turn a folder of notes into a Word report, a slide deck, or a spreadsheet. It makes the actual file, not a description of one.
• Search the web, pull the facts, and assemble them with the sources kept straight.
• Reach into email, calendar, or other connected apps through connectors, then act on what it finds.
• Show up on a schedule. Ask for a morning briefing or a weekly digest once and it runs without being reminded.
• Handle the tedious volume work: renaming hundreds of files, reorganizing folders, converting formats. The jobs that are too small to delegate and too slow to do by hand.

How it is different from chat

A chatbot answers. Cowork finishes. Chat hands you the recipe; Cowork cooks the meal. With chat you break the work into prompts and assemble it yourself. With Cowork you hand over an outcome, and it does the finding, the doing, and the producing, checking in with you on anything that matters.
